About Nothing to Fear Day

Nothing to Fear Day is a day when people examine their fears and see if the fears are preventing them from living life to the fullest. It may be a day to work to overcome these fears. It is also a day to be aware of the way that people and governments use baseless fears to manipulate people, either inadvertently or on purpose.

History of Nothing to Fear Day

May 27 was chosen as the date of Nothing to Fear Day because it was on this date in 1941 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech where he said: "We must not be defeated by the fear of the very danger which we are preparing to resist. Our freedom has shown its ability to survive war, but our freedom would never survive surrender.

'The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.'" This speech was given in the form of a radio address from the White House. It urged for preparedness, and for the country to not be afraid of war, in case it would eventually come.

He referenced his famous line, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself," which appeared in his first inaugural address in 1933. Just over six months later, the United States would be drawn into World War II, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
