Flag Day of the Armed Forces (or Flag Day in India) is a day dedicated to collecting donations from the people of India in favor of the Indian Armed Forces. It has been organized in India on 7 December every year since 1949. Over time, a tradition has developed to honor the memory of Indian soldiers, sailors and pilots on this day.
Immediately after India gained independence, the government had problems with the financing of the Armed Forces. On August 28, 1949, by decision of the commission headed by the Minister of Defense, the celebration of Flag Day was approved annually on December 7th.
The main idea of the Flag Day was the distribution of small flags to the population in exchange for donations. The day took on greater significance as it reminded Indians that they are responsible for supporting the soldiers who defend the country and their families.
